Why Build In Public?

Marketing isn’t always about delivering the perfect product, template, or content in one fell swoop. Transparency, authenticity, and storytelling can make your customers/readers more engaged, and thus, more willing to invest in your story and what you intend to share.

If executed correctly, building in public can attract customers that are excited to share your story with others. And as a Notion creator, sharing your process can allow your customer to customize their workspace with your template better.

Share ideas, questions, and prototype solutions with your audience to better understand what they are looking for.

  1. Launch polls on Twitter to gage enthusiasm.

  2. Share screenshots of your process and tips and tricks that you’ve found useful up to this point.

  3. Inform your audience about the pros and cons of the program and the best ways to utilize it. Show why your system framework works best.

  4. Share roadblocks and ask questions from personal experience. Reach out to see if other users need similar solutions.

  5. You can also share general updates during the process to gage enthusiasm.

  6. Listen to comments during the building in public journey. More questions = more solutions to include in your content.

  7. Include a launch day graphic or countdown widget to create anticipation for your template.

  8. Think about creating a newsletter to share updates as well!

Key To Public Building Effectiveness

The key is authenticity. At the end of the day, an online community that stays is a community that knows they are following a real person with real thoughts and feelings and imperfections too. Building in public flips the traditional marketing strategy on its head. It allows for failures. Those failures are relatable, and how a creator reacts to them publicly can build trust.
